Tala’al badru ‘alaynaa.. Min thaniyyaatil wadaa Wajaba ashukru ‘alaynaa.. Maa da’aa lillaahi daa’ The moon has risen upon us From the valley of Wadaa’ Are we not bound to give thanks When a caller, unto Allah, calls upon us?
- Since news of the Prophet’s departure from Makkah had reached Madeenah, the Muhaajiroon and the Ansaar anxiously awaited his arrival. Everyday, people would go out to the outskirts and look out onto the horizon, expecting to see him. When the sun became too hot they would return to their homes. On the 8th of Rabee’ al-Awwal, 13 years after prophethood, they went out early in the morning and returned later. Soon afterwards a Jew spotted the Prophet ﷺ and called out to them that the man they were waiting for had arrived. The takbeer rang out loudly from all corners of Madeenah, and the Muslims joyously rushed to meet and welcome him.
- The Prophet ﷺ stopped at Qubaa a suburb of Madeenah approximately two miles from the city center. He stayed in the home of Kulthoom ibn Al-Hidm. Aboo Bakr stayed at the home of Khaarijah ibn Zayd.
- While in Qubaa, he physically assisted in laying the foundations of the masjid and building it. This was the first masjid built on the foundation of piety, and the Prophet ﷺ also prayed there. ‘Ali, who had left Makkah 3 days after the Prophet ﷺ also reached Qubaa in this period.
- On Friday the 12th of Rabee’ al-Awwal, (23 September 622 C.E), the Prophet ﷺ began his short but momentous journey to Madeenah. Aboo Bakr, ‘Ali as well as various others from the Muhaajiroon and the Ansaar joined him. He passed through the area of the Banoo Saleem Ibn ‘Awf and performed the first Jumu’ah prayer in Madeenah there. People lined the streets and celebrated joyously. Women looked from windows while children climbed on roofs and trees and sang songs of welcome. Everybody wished and requested for the Prophet to stay with them. The Prophet ﷺ let loose the reins of his camel and instructed the Muslims to allow the camel to choose the path as it was divinely commanded to do so. The camel continued until it reached the place where Al-Masjid An-Nabawi stands today. The Prophet ﷺ did not dismount. The camel rose again, walked a short way and then returned to the same place. The land belonged to two orphans from Banoo An-Najjaar, the maternal family of the Prophet ﷺ . They requested him to stay at one of their homes. In the end the Prophet stayed at the home of Aboo Ayyoob Al-Ansaari whose home was closest to where the masjid would be. Aboo Ayyoob had a two-story home. He stayed on the upper floor and gave use of the lower floor to the Prophet, It was here that the Prophet stayed until the masjid and its adjoining rooms were built.
- A few days later, Zayd ibn Haarithah and Aboo Raafi returned from Makkah. The Prophet ﷺ had sent them to Makkah to bring back his family. Zayd returned with Sawdah, the wife of the Prophet and two of his daughters, Faatimah and Umm Kulthoom. Abdullaah ibn Aboo Bakr also arrived with the family of Aboo Bakr, including ‘Aa’isha.
What we learn from the lesson:
- Success is in the hands of Allah.
- Love for the Prophet ﷺ .
