- Umar ibn Al-Khattaab was born into a very noble family. His lineage meets with that of the Prophet’s in the eight generation. He belonged to the Banoo ‘Adi branch of the Quraysh.
- He was also known as Aboo Hafs and the Prophet ﷺ also gave him the title Al-Faarooq the one who separates truth from falsehood ‘Umar was born approximately thirteen years after the Prophets . ‘Umar was, very hardworking and a keen student. He attained great fame as a wrestler and mastered the art of horsemanship.
- He was one of the few people who could write and read fluently. ‘Umar traveled widely as a merchant and got to know many people in both Iraq and Syria. He was also well acquainted with what was going on in the Roman and Persian Empires As a warrior, ‘Umar struck fear into the hearts of the enemy. Even off the battlefield, there were few who would cross swords with him.
- When the Prophet ﷺ began preaching Islam quietly to the people, ‘Umar was one of those who were totally indifferent to his teachings. However, as time went on, he took a strong disliking to the Prophet ﷺ , Islam and the Muslims. When some Muslims migrated to Abyssinia, it was the last straw for ‘Umar He accused Islam of splitting up the Quraysh, and when some members of the Quraysh resolved to kill Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , ‘Umar volunteered and pledged to do it.
