- Mas-h Al-khuffayn can be done by any Muslim. It is not necessary that the person is sick or in a difficult situation. This ruling is from the Mercy of Allah.
- However, a person cannot wipe over the khuff for an unlimited time. There is a fixed period of time that a person can do Mas-h for. If a person is a resident, then the period that Mas-h can be done for is 24 hours (that is one day and one night). If a person is a traveler, then the period that she/he can wipe over the khuff is 72 hours (that is three days and three nights). This is known from the hadeeth about wiping over the khuff narrated by ‘Ali ibn Abee Taalib
The Messenger of Allah timed the period of wiping three days and three nights for a traveler and one day and one night for the resident. (Muslim)
جعل رسول الله ثلاثة أيام ولياليهُنَّ لِلْمُسَافِرِ وَيَوْمَا وَلَيْلةَ لِلْمُقِيمِ (مسلم)
- The period of wiping starts from the first time the khuff are wiped over, not when the person first wore the khuff. For example, a person who is a resident wore khuffayn at Fajr time and did not wipe over them until Dhuhr. She/He is allowed to wipe over them until Dhuhr the following day, and keep praying with the same wudoo until the wudoo breaks.
- When the period of time ends, the person has to remove the khuff and wash the feet during wudoo if he/she wants to perform Salah. If the person carries on wiping over the khuff, then the wudoo is not acceptable and any Salah that is performed is also unacceptable. This is because the person is praying without having wudoo.
What we learn from the lesson:
- Residents wipe over the khuffayn for a period of 24 hours.
- Travelers can wipe over the khuffayn for 72 hours.
“Discussion:”
- What is the time period for wiping over the khuffayn for both the resident and the traveler?
