- The disbelievers of Makkah persecuted the believers. They made life unbearable for them.
- In the eleventh year of Prophethood, when Allah’s Messenger ﷺ invited the pilgrims to Islam he and his Companions passed by a place called ‘Aqabah in Mina. There they met six people from Madeenah.
- Allah’s Messenger ﷺ spoke to them about Islam. They accepted Islam and promised to go back and invite their people to Islam. The six people were As’ad ibn Zurarah, ‘Awf ibn Haarith, Rafi’ ibn Maalik, Qutbah ibn ‘Aamir, ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Aamir and Jaabir ibn ‘Abdillaah
- The next year during Hajj, a group of twelve Muslims came from Madeenah. This group included five of the six people who had accepted Islam the previous year. They took an oath that they would not ascribe partners to Allah. They promised not to steal nor to kill their children. They made a pledge not to speak badly of others nor to disobey Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . This was called the first pledge of ‘Aqabah.
- After the pledge, the Prophet ﷺ sent Mus’ab ibn Umayr, to teach the people about Islam. He also invited the disbelievers to Islam.
