His Stance
Salmaan lived to see not only the demise of the Prophet ﷺ but also the demise of the first two khaleefahs. He was noted for his vast knowledge and wisdom and was even compared to Luqmaan, the Wise. He was the true seeker of the truth and that became evident in the hardships he endured, the most notable being enslavement. He was such a respected man that the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ would always seek his advice on certain issues. On his deathbed, Salmaan was seen weeping excessively and when he was asked about it, he answered that he was told by the Prophet ﷺ to live a life of a traveler. He had one bowl for eating and drinking and one for washing, therefore he considered himself as not living a life of a traveler but rather a life of luxury. He did not fear death or anything else; he rather feared the Hereafter and not fulfilling the blessed words of the Prophet ﷺ . Ultimately this was the cause of his excessive weeping and in the end we can understand why he was called the “Son of Islam”.
His Actions
Salmaan’s actions were that of a true leader. While he was the ameer of a town called Al-Madaa’in (a town in Persia), he was dressed in old wom out clothes and busy walking whena stranger called him to assist him with carrying some goods. Salmaan, in spite of being agreat leader, immediately responded to the man and assisted him. While they were walking, some people recognized Salmaan and rushed to remove the goods from his shoulders.
He politely refused and carried the load for the man until he reached his destination. The man, who was still shocked after thinking of Salmaan to be a poor man, did not know how to apologize to him. Salmaan on the other hand thought of this action as doing something great and hoped for his reward only from Allah. Another example of the great man was that one day while he was preparing dough to make bread, one of his friends walked in and told him to leave what he was doing for his servant. Salmaan, out of mercy told his friend that he sent his servant to the market to get some things and that he disliked anybody to do two things at the same time. This showed the justice and sense of equality he possessed. His actions ultimately led him to be named by the Prophet as a member of household of the Prophet ﷺ .
His Death
Political power made no changes in Salmaan’s simple life. He devoted himself to render his services to the poor people and as an ameer he conveyed the message of Islam to the people of Persia. Salmaan lived to be an old man. According to the most reliable account, he died in the year thirty-five after the hijrah, aged eighty, which was during the khilaafah of Uthmaan and was mourned throughout the Islamic world.
