- After the Battle of Nahrawaan, in which the Kharijites were defeated, they went into hiding. They opposed both ‘Ali and Mu’aawiyah, and they continued to work against the khilaafah. They wanted to capitalize on the differences between the Muslims regarding ‘Ali and Mu’aawiyah. Therefore they came up with a plan to end the state of affairs of the Muslims at the time. As a result of their plan, they decided to get rid of ‘Ali, Mu’aawiyah and ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas was included in their list of targets because he was considered to be Mu’aawiyah’s chief planner.
- Three men were appointed to assassinate ‘Ali Mu’aawiyah and ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas. The mission was to be carried out on the 17th of Ramadaan in the year 40 A.H.
- After Fajr (dawn prayers) on the 17th of Ramadaan, the three appointed assassins went for their targets. Mu’aawiyah escaped with a minor wound. ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas was ill and could not attend the fajr prayers. However, ‘Ali, was fatally wounded with the poisoned sword of Ibn Muljam. A few days later on the 20th of Ramadaan he passed away at the age of sixty three. He reigned as khaleefah for four years and nine months.
His achievements for Islam
- ‘Ali’s khilaafah concentrated mainly on uniting the Muslims and restoring the Islamic world to normality Ali had to with many difficult issues, which he faced with extraordinar courage.
- Ali never lost heart and his will power and determination never left him even at the most crucial and dangerous times. He fought many battles during the time of the Prophet, and during the time of his predecessors. He fought with extreme courage and bravery for the sake of Islam.
- He was very loyal to the Prophets as well as the first three khulafaa (caliphs), Aboo Bakr, Umar and ‘Uthmaan. It was because of his courage, bravery and sense of justice that he was chosen as the best person for the position as khaleefah.
- Furthermore, besides being courageous, brave and just, ‘Ali was also a great scholar and jurist. ‘Aa’ishah, during her time, considered him to be the most learned with regard to the Sunnah of the Prophet. He spent thirty years of his life with the Prophet and had observed all manners and practices of the Prophet in great detail.
- He memorized the entire Qur’aan and knew its commentary including the order of descent and time of revelation of the various verses. ‘Ali once said:
“I can tell when every verse of the Qur’aan was revealed”. Therefore ‘Ali has been considered as one of the foremost commentators of the Qur’aan. In fact no one except ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Abbaas was equally learned in the Qur’aan as ‘Ali . ‘Ali was not only a great scholar but a great jurist too. - He was especially famous for giving correct verdicts which were always based on Qur’aan and Sunnah. Regarding ‘Ali’s ability to give sound judgments on matters of law, ‘Umar once remarked, “Ali is the greatest jurist and judge among all of us, and to this ‘Abdullaah bin Mas’ood considered ‘Ali’s decision as the most authentic. Even Mu’aawiyah, despite his differences with ‘Ali, used to seek ‘Ali’s judgment on certain legal issues.
- Furthermore, ‘Ali also delivered some of the best speeches and because of this many people were convinced and accepted Islam. He was at all times involved in spreading the message of Islam. He was an excellent writer and an accomplished poet.
- ‘Ali was a great scholar, teacher, judge and leader who gave up his life for the service of Islam. Very few companions equaled him in closeness to the Prophet , whose noble qualities he imbibed.
