‘Aa’ishah bint (daughter of) Aboo Bakr As-Siddeeq’s life with the Prophet is a practical example of how marriage should be. Their relationship lasted nine years and endured some of the most difficult of life’s trials and crises. Her time with the Prophet ﷺ enabled her to leam much from the Prophet while enjoying his companionship as his wife and a mother to all of the believers.
Her home was a small simple one, which was made out of brick, palm leaves, and palm trees. The Prophet ﷺ built it so that it would be located close to the masjid. The apartment was positioned just east of the masjid, and its door extended into the masjid from the west. The masjid was so dose to the Prophet’s home that if he needed something from his home, ‘Aa’ishah could easily pass it to him without being noticed. He would only need to reach into his apartment from the masjid and ‘Aa’ishah could hand him whatever he may have needed. In this small humble home, the Prophet ﷺ lived with his wife.
“Aalishah was one of the most beloved people to the Prophet ﷺ . This is confirmed by the narration of ‘Amr ibn Al-‘Aas who approached the Prophet and asked him: “Which of the people is the most beloved to you?” He responded: “Aa’ishah,” Then he asked (for further clarification): “From the men?” To which the Prophet responded: “Her father.” Then he asked (for even more clarification): “Then who?” To this the Prophet said: “Umar ibn Al-Khattaab” and then mentioned a number of others. Many of the Companions were able to recognize this and were well aware of the Prophet’s great love for “Aa’ishah The Prophet’s relationship with ‘Aa’ishah was in no way rigid or strict. Rather, there are numerous examples from the Sunnah which confirm that the Prophet was often playful and lighthearted with ‘Aa’ishah. One of the best examples of this occurred at a time when “Aa’ishah was traveling on a journey with the Prophet. The Prophet instructed the caravan to move ahead while he and ‘Aa’ishah intentionally fell behind. Then the Prophet turned to ‘Aa’ishah and said: “Come here, I want to race you.” She was very thin at the time which helped her to win the race. The Prophet did not speak about the race again until he challenged her to a second race. This time her body had changed to the point that it may have given the Prophetan advantage. This time the Prophet ﷺ won the race and proclaimed: “This one was for that one.”
In fact, the Prophet ﷺ was kind and gentel to all his wives. He is the perfect role model of how men should treat their wives with kindness, love and respect. He encouraged his Companions to live in peace and harmony with their wives and to treat them in the best possibl way in the same manner as he did. Theis is evident from the following narrations.
Narrated by Aboo Hurayrah
The Prophet ﷺ said. “The most perfect Muslim in the matter of faith is one who has excellent behavior; and the best among you are those who behave best towards their wives.” (Al-Termithi)
Narrated by ‘Aa’ishah
Allah’s Massenger (peace be upon him) said, “The best of you is he who is best to his family, and I am the best among you to my family.” (Al-Termithi)
Close examination of the Prophet’s biography and the narrations concerning the time that was shared between the Prophet and ‘Aa’ishah will reveal that the nine years that “Aa’ishah spent in the Prophet’s household were nine years of love and affection which serve as a practical example of how to establish a Muslim home.
