- The Jumu’ah prayer begins with the adhaan or the call to prayer. Once this is done it becomes incumbent upon all Muslims to leave whatever they are doing, and prepare for the prayer. It is not permissible to engage in any type of trade or any related activities. Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’aan :
Then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.” (Soorat al-Jumu’ah:9)
- The adhaan is announced once the imaam has ascended the minbar (pulpit) to deliver the khutbataan (two sermons). However, in the time of ‘Uthmaan another adhaan was announced prior to the one given inside the masjid when the imaam was already on the minbar.
The purpose of this was to call and give some additional time to the traders and people from the marketplace to prepare for prayer. They might not hear the adhaan or find it difficult to proceed to the masjid on time. Nevertheless, with the adhaan in the masjid, the Salaatul Jumu’ah commences. - The imaam ascends the minbar after zawaal (when the sun reaches its zenith) and sits down. From the minbar, he then listens to the adhaan being delivered minbar. Once this is done, he then begins his khutbataan (two sermons). The first sermon begins with the Praise and Glorification of Allah ﷻ . Peace and blessings are then invoked upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ . The imaam then addresses the people on issues wherein he would admonish, advise, war, give glad tidings to the Muslims. He commands them to do what Allah ﷻ and His Prophet ﷺ have commanded, and forbids them from what they have forbidden. He will probably also address them on issues of current relevance. He sits down for a short period and then stands up and addresses the community again, beginning in a similar way.
- During the khutbataan, it is of great importance that whoever is present listens attentively to the sermon. Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’aan:
“So when the Qur’aan is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.” (Soorat al-A’raaf:204)
- The ‘Ulamaa are of the view that this verse relates to Salah as well as to the khutbataan. The Prophet ﷺ has also warned against talking during the khutbah, to the extent that he forbade a person from using signs to stop another person who might be talking.
- The last of the obligatory part of the Salaatul Jumu’ah is the two raka’aat of Salah. This begins when the imaam descends from the minbar and waits for the mu’adhdhin to call out the iqaamah. The imaam then leads two raka’aat of obligatory Salah for Jumu’ah. It is advisable for him to recite Soorat al-‘Alaa (Soorah: 87) in the first rak’ah and Soorat al-Ghaashiyah (Soorah: 88) in the second.
- It is important to note that there are various nafl (optional) prayers that could be performed. Certain types of Salah have also been known as Sunnah (authentically proven practice of the Prophet ﷺ). These should be performed and not missed as far as possible.
What we learn from the lesson:
- When the adhaan for Jumu’ah is called, we must stop everything and proceed to the masjid.
- We must listen attentively to the khutbah, without communicating in any way.
